My 7 year old recently started guitar lessons.

Driving to his first lesson, he tells me, 'Dad, I'm scared.'

'It's ok to be scared, buddy.' I tell him. 'Remember, there's always something awesome on the other side of that fear.'

'I know.' He says.

We get to the school and as we walk in the doors, his guitar strapped across his chest, he stops, takes off his glasses and wipes a couple tears from his eyes. Then with a trembly voice looks up and asks me, 'Are all the tears gone?'

I feel them start to well up in me. 'Yep, you got them all buddy. You ready?' I ask.

With a big deep breath, he puts his glasses back on and says, 'I'm ready.' Then walks through the doors.

Proud Dad moment to say the least.

Two months later, although it's challenged him, he's rocking it and having a blast!

I love that little boy and the lessons he, and my other 3 kids, are constantly teaching me.

Thinking about this experience with him also got me thinking about something else.

Our weight loss goals.

More specifically, how impatient and hard we are on ourselves. The shitty, mean things we say to ourselves when we make a mistake. The constant comparison to others and their progress. The focusing on our flaws and how far we have to go. I could go on and on.

But yet, what do we tell our kids when they're taking on something, like guitar, that challenges them?

You got this.

Be patient with yourself.

It's going to take time, but stick with it and you'll get there.

You're amazing.

You're strong.

You're smart.

Of course, we tell our kids this stuff. Because it's all true.

Well, guess what?

It's just as true for you and your weight loss goals.

It's going to take time, but stick with it and you'll get there.

You're amazing, strong and smart.

You have everything it takes to get there. You just need to be kind and believe in yourself.

Like you'd believe in your child. Try talking to yourself like that.

Because you deserve it, just like they do.

You got this.
